Starlight Children’s Foundation

Submitted by on March 19, 2010 – 1:20 pmNo Comment

Founded in 1983, Starlight Children’s Foundation is an international nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities.

In 1985, the New York Chapter began… since then they have expanded their service to reach seriously ill children in New Jersey and Connecticut. They are proud to say that this past year, their programs benefited more than 275,000 children and their family members in the tri-state area.

The positive impact of Starlight’s programs on the lives of seriously ill children has been widely acknowledged by researchers, medical professionals and child life specialists who work directly with these children in the pediatric care units of hospitals. The benefits of Starlight programs may include:

• Decreased pain and anxiety
• Increased knowledge and sense of responsibility for managing their disease
• Better methods to cope with their illnesses
• Decreased need for pain medication
• A greater willingness to return for treatment
• Released and transformed emotional pain
• A greater sense of peer support
• New friends who understand
• Alleviation of the stress, loneliness and isolation that often accompany prolonged illness
• Children, infants and teens served by Starlight suffer from chronic, serious or life-threatening illnesses, physical disabilities and life-altering injuries.

While other organizations focus on finding cures, there are few organizations that provide children with strategies, programs and services that enable them to cope with the challenging daily demands of illness, injury or disability. While researchers look for cures and doctors work to restore a child’s health, Starlight works to restore the entire family’s spirits.

[The Starlight Children’s Foundation is dedicated to sustain and give support to extensively hospitalized and disabled children and their families suffering from a wide range of critical ailments. Founded in 1983 by Steven Spielberg and Peter Samuelson, in this past year it helped 275,000 children in New York City.

Some of Starlight’s programs and aid to children include:

Starlight Children’s Foundation offers to hospitals the “Starlight Fun Center”. A tall rolling stand with a flat panel screen, Nintendo console, DVD player, and games & movies compartment. The unique Nintendo Wii controller is especially suited to children with disabilities thanks to its remote like design and various motion sensors as well as other input methods and controllers.

Starlight supporter Bruce Ostrover’s and family 7th Annual Tennis Tournament raised over $16,000, enough to have purchased 4 “Starlight Fun Centers Units”.

Starlight held a fund raiser where students of 3 of New York City’s middle schools collected pennies raised $1,050 in Starlight grants.

In contrast to gravel or tar covered hospital rooftops, Starlight had the innovation to create a park on the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center roof, complete with plants, flowers, and a playground.

In partnership with Versace, all across the country Starlight supported children drew canvases to be used on Versace tote bags and sold at boutiques worldwide, with proceeds donated back to Starlight.]
